The electric car will be equipped with a battery of the next generation.

The “cheap” Tesla electric car promised a few years ago will go into production at the end of 2025. The Project Redwood series will go under the name Model 2. It is expected that the new “budgeter” will allow the company to gain a foothold in the more competitive segment costing less than $32,000.

Thanks to Model 2, the manufacturer expects to regain its leading position in the global electric car market. In the last quarter of last year, it was transferred to BYD. As promised to shareholders, the total circulation of Tesla Model 2 for all years of production will reach 700 million units. For comparison, in 58 years, the most popular car in the world, the Toyota Corolla, sold a little more than 50 million units.

According to the chairman of the company, Elon Musk, the development of Tesla Model 2 began in 2020. But the first details about the novelty appeared only at the end of last year. At the same time, it was announced that the production of the model will begin in 2025. The company is currently negotiating with spare parts suppliers.

The affordable price tag of the Model 2 will provide a radical new manufacturing process called “Unboxed”. According to Tesla, it will reduce assembly costs and production time by 50%. In fact, at every stage of the production process, unnecessary movements of the car or its components along the production line will be eliminated. For example, the seats will be attached directly to the battery pack under the floor. This design will fit into a partially painted body to avoid having to remove and reinstall the door.

The use of a next-generation battery unit will allow the cost of the car to be reduced. The content of silicon carbide in it is reduced by 75%. The company will also reduce the content of rare earth metals in its new engines.

Information about the Tesla Model 2 power plant has not been disclosed. It is expected that the “budgeter” will be offered with one and two engines. According to some reports, the Model 2 will be based on a new platform, different from the one used by the Model 3 and Model Y.
